How I Treat the Nest Safely

Very often people call it wasp nest removal, but in reality, it is a highly effective wasp nest treatment.
The safest method—both for your property and for me—is to treat the nest from the outside of the property wherever possible. Lofts get unbelievably hot in the summer months, and when you are wearing a thick, heavy protective sting suit, trying to balance on open ceiling beams is a precarious task.
What actually happens during the treatment:
Blasting the Entrance: In most cases, I use a specialized sprayer that pumps a dry, powder-based insecticide. I blast this powder directly into the nest entrance at around 2–3 bar of pressure. This is normally injected only inches away from where you can see the wasps traveling in and out.
The Wasps Do the Work: The wasps that are inside the nest get coated in this fine insecticide dust. They then take the dust deeper into the nest and clean each other off, which kills the colony internally.
The Returning Swarm: The wasps currently out of the nest won't want to go back inside. The fine powder creates a barrier they won't cross. All insects breathe through a row of tiny breathing holes called spiracles along the side of their body. Because this fine dust easily clogs those breathing holes, returning wasps completely avoid it. They will either try to join another local nest or die off. Without a queen and a nest to serve, a wasp loses its purpose.
In rare cases, I might do a physical removal of a live nest, but I don't normally take this action. It is far safer to use the dry powder spray, and the end result is exactly the same.
A bit about my background: I have carried out thousands of wasp nest treatments over the years. Working for Croydon Council and Wealden District Council alone, I was covering 8 to 12 nests a day during the peak of the season. I know exactly how to handle even the most aggressive nests safely.

Inside a loft, we are all guilty of using that valuable space for storage, which makes it even harder to scramble to where the nest is hidden.
Lighting is another huge issue. If there is no light and you take a torch into a dark loft, the wasps are instantly attracted to your torchlight or the open loft hatch because it looks like the exit. As soon as you switch that torch on, you become the brightest thing in the room and the main target.
What happens after I leave?
After treating the nest, all activity should completely cease within 48 hours. A nest, once exterminated, will never be utilized again by wasps. Similarly, an old nest that naturally died off during the winter frosts will never be reused next year.
